Here is a handful of links off the australian govt immigration website. You will find lots of other links off of these to find most of your answers.

Discretionary Assurance of Support

In most other visa subclasses, a discretionary Assurance of Support may be requested if an applicant is assessed as being at risk of becoming a charge on Australia's welfare system. This request is based upon close consideration of the education, skills, employment history, English language capacity and age of the visa applicant and their sponsor.

No, I haven't had the experience and I am not from Australia; however, I doubt that you can sponsor him. The idea of sponsoring someone is that you show that you are capable of supporting that person so that he is not going to go on government subsidies or welfare. You should check the info out on Australia's immigration website, but I doubt very much that you can sponsor him.

here in the us it is most likely you wont be able to. you have to earn about 125% above the poverty line to be able to sponsor. if the rules are the same here and there, then maybe you can have someone else offer to sponsor. just check with a service center nearby or online..
The US has a minimum income line that needs to be met in order to sponsor a fiancee (around $13,000 I believe). In Australia it is around $33,000 and must be documented for the last two years. It is very hard to go to Australia and it will take about a year to process and cost thousands of dollars in fees. You could go to the USA as his fiancee if he is a citizen.

The big question in the Australian government's mind is how he is going to be covered for health insurance during the period is not eligible for government subsidised coverage. He would also not be able to get unemployment benefits etc. Also, keep in mind that once you get married, you would also lose your single parent pension. He would be required to support you and your child(ren).
