I just wanted to know through other's experiences, how caring for a parent or love one who has suffered a stroke impacted your life?Has anyone had to care for a parent who suffered from a stroke?
I moved in with my dad when he had his stroke, please, please, please don't try to do it all yourself..ask for help, especially if there if lifting involved. I has to have Home Health come in to help me. Be prepared mentally that this will wear on all of your nerves, you will also go through an angry period, you will get angry with your parent because at some time you will think they had this stroke on purpose, you WILL go through many changes, but remember no matter what the out come will be, you certainly will feel very good about yourself, no matter how much you sacrificed, that you were the one that took care of your parent. Bless you....Has anyone had to care for a parent who suffered from a stroke?
I am a nurse and have worked with many, many stroke victims in the past 25 years. What I have seen is the impact on the victim where they do not normally want their loved ones to care for them and they want to do as much for themselves as they can. It is really, really important to let them do as much for themselves as they are able to maintain their independence. Strokes cause the person to suffer many losses- from loss of bodily functions to losses of ability to do simple, everyday things. Letting the person talk (if they can) and do as much as they can is the key to not adding an additional stress into their lives.
